Happy Groundhog Day! (Fun facts for you…)

by Lani and Allen

On behalf of the team at Epiphanies, Inc. (namely, us – Lani & Allen), we’d like to wish you a Happy Groundhog Day!

Since Punxsutawney Phil just predicted another six weeks of winter, we thought we’d warm your spirits with a few quick facts about Groundhog Day. Enjoy ‘em just for the heck of it, or feel free to use ‘em for:

  • Networking icebreakers
  • Inspiration or fodder for newsletters, ezines, articles, news releases, blog posts and tweets
  • Sounding timely and witty as you pepper your day’s small talk with these bits of trivia

(Adapted from Wikipedia.)

1. The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator (big word for “fortune teller”).

2. Though Punxsutawney residents claim Phil is infallible, the National Climatic Data Center reportedly has stated that the overall predictions accuracy rate is around 39%.

3. In the old days, farmers flagged the reappearance of hibernating animals as a sign of Spring’s arrival. So this whole groundhog-coming-out-of-the-burrow thing once had a very practical application!

4. Phil isn’t the only rodent forecaster – just the most famous. Other groundhogs of note include “Jimmy the Groundhog” (Sun Prairie, Wisconsin); “Wiarton Willie” (Wiarton, Ontario, Canada); “Staten Island Chuck” (New York), “General Beauregard Lee, PhD” (Atlanta) and “Shubenacadie Sam” (Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, Canada).

5. Because we, the Voivod family, struggled to get holiday cards out in the month of December, for a few years we gave up altogether and adopted Groundhog Day as the holiday for which we sent out greetings to friends, family, and loved ones.

And there you have it! Here’s hoping you enjoyed it…and if the spirit moves you, please share this email with your family, friends, and other contacts who’d enjoy it!

Wishing you luck and laughter,

Lani & Allen
