January 2009

For the last week or so, Al and I have been sharing our newest fave ‘n free biz resource – Animoto - on our blog and in our Inciter ezine.

Holly Davis, design diva of Girls' Night Out Designs

Congrats to Holly Davis, the owner, designer, artist, and totally rad visionary behind Girls’ Night Out Designs for giving Animoto a whirl and creating her first 30-second video to showcase her amazing jewelry.

Holly, who is also the multi-talented editor of fabulous NH Mirror (for which I am now officially the proud writer of their newest monthly column: The Broad Appeal!), said:

“That was just the first one I made to see how it works. With a few tweaks, I think it could be a cute addition to my site! Thank you guys for the tip!”

See Holly’s handiwork below. (It’s hip and darn cool, don’t you think?) Then get bold ‘n creative and see what kinds of li’l videos you can create for your own business, passions, or hobbies. Certainly, it’s a fine and FUN way to “A-Ha Yourself!”

We love this tool so much, we’ve set up a special link to keep it in our Epiphanies, Inc. arsenal: www.AhaBizVideo.com. Happy McG-ing! (“McG” is a famous MTV video director, in case you didn’t know.)

Lani and I are listening to a call with Ali Brown right now, who’s talking about the big, bold moves she made in her business in 2008, and what she’s got on tap for 2009.

We went to her Online Success Blueprint Workshop (OSBW) last November, and got a sneak preview of how she’s up-leveled in a way that even Lani and I hadn’t expected – and Lani’s been following her since 2001, for Pete’s sake.

So I’m going to try to catch some of the bon mots as we listen, and drop them here in this post for you…

When she asked herself what the most important message was that she could deliver to the listeners on the call, the answer was, “Be ready to receive. Be ready to receive larger gifts than any of you can imagine.”

When it comes to your specialized knowledge, “The marketing is more important than the mastery.” (If you need to hear that right now, then we’ve got a soultion for you.)

Letting go of parts of her business  – particularly the Big Rock, the OSBW – was scary, for her and for her team, because they weren’t sure how they were going to replace the revenue. But she knew she was “making room for something bigger.”

When you’re getting out of your comfort zone, that’s a good thing. That feeling is a sign that something’s brewing. And her new billionaire mentor opened her eyes to what’s possible – to go from info marketer to media mogul.

“Write down the moments from childhood that brought you so much joy” … and find ways to bring those feelings into your life today.

Before, I was doing one thing at a time … I’ve created the leverage, by building a team, to launch five websites in March, and do lots of things simultaneously.

She used to be thinking month by month, and about just paying the rent, and now she’s looking years in advance to plan her growth.

There’s a “good kind of uncomfortable.”

She’s gone from creating an “Online Success Blueprint” to an “Ultimate Business Blueprint.”

The five big mindset shifts she made to be ready to get to this point in her life and biz:

1. Stop “ladder-climbing” and start “leap-frogging.” And when you see the leap you want to make, you can’t worry about the “how.” Just make the choice, make the leap, make the decisions, and the details will come to you. It does require completely different thinking, though.

2. Learn from a broader perspective than your own industry. Look at people who’ve done what you want to do, but outside your circle. If you are comfortable doing what you’re doing, then you’re actually stagnating. The single purpose of a business is to make a profit. If you can’t make a buck, you can’t help anyone else. If you can’t see the bigger vision, don’t worry if you can’t see the bridge, because you should…

3. Make decisions not from where you are, but from where you want to be. It’s like the old saying about dressing not for the job you have, but for the job you’re aiming for. It’s up to you how big you want to take it, but success is never on sale. Money is not going to magically appear – but you can make decisions about the money that goes out of your business, and spend it in ways that can bring in much, MUCH more.

4. Plan carefully, but don’t sit on your plans. Planning was the key that brought Ali in 2006 over the million-dollar mark for the first time. (Hey! We’ve got a marketing planning teleseminar next week!) That includes moving away from immediate results. You may have to make decisions to spend money where you won’t see the results right away, but when you do the planning, it’s easier to make those decisions in faith.

5. Surround yourself with people and environments to support you. Most of us spend our days supporting other people. And not necessarily people who want to play at the same level you’re gunning for. Ali referenced the Jim Rohm quote about being the average of the five people you spend time with most (I’m paraphrasing, but that’s about right.) You need to be around people who GET IT, who are positive, successful entrepreneurs who want to make a big impact on the world and many people’s lives. All the traits for success are, as Napoleon Hill says, are not birthrights but actually learnable. And masterminding, as Hill flagged in Think and Grow Rich, was key for Ali.

To that last point, Ali is holding people’s feet to the fire, so to speak, in her new Millionaire Protege Club. As of this call I’m blogging, there are 24 spots left in the Platinum Level of the Program, and if the success stories of her previous Platinum Program participants that we heard at OSBW are any indication, it’s certainly worth a look.

I just left a comment over at the Small Biz Bee‘s blog, where they said the only piece of advice a business owner may ever need is this:

“Keep doing what you’ve always done and you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.”

In the interest of multitasking my time and content, I’m sharing my comment here:

Thanks for the post. You know, I was just talking to my good friend Lisa Steadman (an amazing author, relationship coach, and solo-preneur in her own right), and we were talking about the comfort zone thing. Lisa and I realized we both “suffer” from a split personality issue that many entrepreneurs likely share. It’s a battle between our BOLD, FEARLESS selves and that squeamish, sulking, other self.

Seems like whenever the cranky, complacent one looks the other way, the BOLD, FEARLESS personality makes all these plans, promises, and proclaimations. They’re all super ambitious, scary, and completely unreasonable to a normal person.

Then that comparatively lazy, ambivilant personality realizes what the other has done, and is forced to step up and fulfill the plans and promises, despite a raging resistence to the whole darn matter.

It’s a constant inner battle between these two personalities — the one who’d be fine doing what she’s always done, and the one who absolutely hails the message you write in your blog post.

The ultimate battle cry from that incorrigible BOLD, FEARLESS persona:

“REACH! GROW! LEAP! TAKE CHANCES! FAIL, FAIL, AND TRY AGAIN! EXPERIMENT! And most importantly…GET OUT OF THAT DANG COMFORT ZONE!!!”

Sometimes she’s exausting, but for the most part, Lisa and I agreed we’re VERY lucky to have her on our team, or we’d never get anywhere.

May you, too, be *blessed* with a similar split personality disorder that shoves you out of your comfort zone and into a fuller, richer, more inspired life. :)

Ever fantasized about making MTV-like videos? Give Animoto a try. It costs absolutely zilch to make a fun li’l 30-second spot like the one we made below.

Think you need more than 30 seconds to flex your Spielbergian muscle? Drop a whopping $3 to create one full-length “music video” (perhaps an homage to your best friend, or some fun promotional piece for your business). If you really get bit by the vid-making bug, pick a package that best suits your needs and interests. (They’ve got affordable options for both personal and business purposes.)

And please don’t hesitate to let me know if you give it a whirl. I’d love to see your handiwork! :)

See if this sounds familiar…

Nobody can do what YOU can do, in the specific way you do it. Regardless of how many people have a similar skill set, you have a certain style, personality, and attitude that can’t be matched by anyone else! You’re so good at what you do, and enjoy it so much, you decided to turn it into a business for yourself.

Unfortunately, when it comes to promoting yourself, marketing your products, or selling your services, all the confidence you have in yourself just flies out the window, and you feel as awkward as a flamingo pretending to be an ostrich.

You might ask someone for marketing help, but you’re not sure what that would look like. You see only the cost of marketing, because you haven’t seen or don’t believe in marketing’s return on investment. Maybe you have ideas but you’re not sure where to start, or you don’t think you can write marketing material, or you think “marketing” is a synonym for that four-letter-word – “SELL.”

Now, here comes 2009. A fresh and clean start. How will you make this year different from the one before? How will you move past the overwhelm, leave behind the regrets about what you did or didn’t do last year, and focus on “sharing the value” rather than “getting the business” (which, happily, puts more money in your bank account)?

In the spirit of Radical Honesty, I have to admit that the above paragraphs hit pretty close to home. I also know, from meeting and talking to business owners across the country, that we’re not the only ones out there with these challenges.

Which is why we’re inviting you to our 2-Day “Down ‘n Dirty Marketing Planning for 2009″ teleseminar event. Don’t make marketing planning any harder than it has to be. Come play with us! Invest a couple hours and what you’d pay for a decent night out to roll your sleeves up, figure out the most strategic, cost-effective ways to drive more sales and profits in 2009…and then plug ‘em into a plan that works.

Even if you can’t make the live calls for this event, you still get the digital recordings, along with a raft full of templates and bonuses.

Besides, what’s it going to cost you NOT to get the help you need in planning for a better 2009?

Read more about it and reserve your seat here, and we hope to “see” you on the calls!

Welcome to a brand-spankin’ new year, and back to your work week! Don’t you just love that first Monday back from any sort of vacation — ESPECIALLY the December/January switcheroo? The alarm goes off, and no matter how enlightened you are, you can’t help but resort to that “Ugh” moment. Back to emails and schedules and deadlines, back to hustling and thinking and networking…

No matter how you dice it, the first Monday of any new year is a toughie.

That’s why I’m sharing this video with you today. Today of all days, let’s ease back into our hopes and dreams, our to-do lists and global concerns, our plans and possibilities with a sense of awe and optimism. If you’re a semi-conscious human being, you’re going to feel inspired and amazed by the message, execution, and vision represented in this video.

Besides, it’s not a shabby example of meaningful (yet unconventional) SOCIAL MARKETING, either. ;)

May we all offer the world something as beautiful at least once this year, and many more times over the course of our lives.

[A big THANKS to Marirose Walker, a Natural Health Consultant and owner of Healing Wise Services in Warner, NH,  for letting me know this video exists!]

A simple prayer that’s got some staying power…

…all pretty and easy to view thanks to Animoto, our newest biz play tool.

Happy New Year! I don’t know how you’re spending the second day of 2009, but so far, Allen and I have made whole-grain apple pancakes, played with race tracks, hit a spin class, picked up one of our son’s friends for a play date, and experimented with a cool web-based video creation tool called Animoto.

There are a ton of ways any business could make use of this tool, since it’s an easy, free (or low-cost) way to deliver your message, products, and services to your Ideal Audience.

Are you creative? Do you wish you had a way to showcase your wares, share your ideas, market your business, and appear hipper and savvier than you may feel in this tech-driven, visually-obsessed culture? Give their 30-second free version a try. Just upload a few images and/or text, pick a royalty-free soundtrack, and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a sweet li’l vid. (Check out the one we did below.)

It’s not perfect – I’m bummed the automated engine behind the program refused to squeeze in a few more images, but what do I want for free? - but I can see great potential and I’m excited by the possibilities.

“One of the greatest feelings in life is the conviction that you have lived the life you wanted to live – with the rough and the smooth, the good and the bad – but yours, shaped by your own choices, and not someone else’s.”

– Canadian historian and politician Michael Ignatieff

Happy New Year, everyone!
