Brainstorm better with these 30+ mindmapping tools

by Lani Voivod

Buried deep, deep, deep down in my inbox, I found an email from Sir Kevin Skarritt (Chief Nut at Acorn Creative) containing what appears to be the ultimate one-stop resource for killer mind-mapping resources (more than 30 links in all!), kindly shared by Mashable.com

If you’re not familiar with mindmapping, it’s VERY cool. Whether you do it with a fancy online tool or with good, old-fashioned paper and pen, it’s a way to:

  • Organize your thoughts visually
  • “Imitate” the brains non-linear approach to considering problems (and opportunities)
  • Share information in a more powerful way
  • Capture ideas quickly and constructively
  • Summarize, consolidate, and present concepts efficiently and effectively
  • BRAINSTORM – by yourself, or with groups!!!

Here are a couple of visual examples:

If you want to know more about mind-mapping and how you could use it in your own life and business, check out this good article, Mindmapping for the Quick-Witted, by self-declared “mindmapping enthusiast” Dr. Vj Mariaraj, or see what Wikipedia has to say about it.

Bottom line: It’s FUN, it’s EFFECTIVE, and it’s a great tool for BRAINSTORMING!

I echo your suggestion. I’ve used mind-mapping for years. I find I work more quickly with pen and paper than with the available online tools. My maps can provide the outline for a project, an article I want to write, a decision to a difficult problem I’m noodling, and many other things. Mind-mapping gets me going faster, and allows me to be more creative than a linear outline.

I especially like to use mind-mapping when I am moderating focus groups to build brand identity for a client. Sometimes I even have my participants prepare a mind-map of the product, service, company, etc. before coming into the focus group to help them get immersed in the topic.

And, besides all the practical uses, mind-maps help you “see” your dreams.

Introducing me to Mashable was deadly. How will I ever get off the computer? No matter how much I know, there is always more to research!
