Run with it!

August 26th, 2006 by Lani Voivod

A short while ago, I blogged that You Tube is a creative professional’s secret weapon for radical exposure and worldwide domination. Or something along those lines.

Now I’d like to show you exactly what I’m talking about. Below you’ll see a video clip with that confident “You Tube” mark stamped right in the corner. However, you may not notice that right way. Instead, you may be wondering why four adult gentlemen are standing with the queen’s posture on top of a sea of treadmills. If you’re a mildly normal human being, you’ll be intrigued enough to click the “Play” button to see what’s up.

Then you’ll get the priceless golden ring of life: You’ll laugh.

Depending on what kind of person you are, this may not happen right away. You may squint, cock your head, shrug, or crinkle up your nose in a scoff, wondering why the heck the friend who sent this to you is wasting your time, or why these four misfits are wasting your time, or why you don’t just shun technology once and for all pull a Walden Pond for the rest of your life.

But as you continue watching, at some point you’re going to forced to confront a few thoughts:

  • How long did these guys practice?
  • Why did they even come up with this idea?
  • Where do you get a sea of treadmills?

And the big one:

  • Who ARE these dudes, and what else do they have to show me?

Unfortunately, this video clip doesn’t answer these questions for me. But if they ended this modern-day Busby Berkeley production with a website, a product, or a bold call to action, then baby — there’s a really good chance I’d go deeper down the rabbit hole with them.

I don’t know who they are. I don’t know if it’s their music (which I love, and I’d probably download into my iTunes in a heartbeat, if only to show my 99-cent support for their time and creativity!), or if they’re just a bunch of mod cyber-goofs playing around with their techie toys.

All I know is if I see a screen capture of four unusual hipsters again, I’m going to click. And hopefully next time they’ll invite me to get to know them better.
