Ah, camping on the shores of Sebago Lake, ME. The call of loons before sunrise. The skunk outside our tent in the middle of the night. The compelling page-turner of a business book I read by the campfire after our son passed out from hours of play with his 10 cousins.
What book, you ask? Why, it’s Blogwild!, Andy Wibbels’ super-strightforward introduction to the blogging phenomenon. It’s pitch perfect - a breezily written and completely unintimidating guide to getting started, fast and painlessly.
My biggest “A-Ha!” from it came in a little section called “Become the Filter, Be the Lens”:
Think of all the information that your potential customers and current clients need to know to succeed in their businesses and their lives. Without a doubt, they don’t have time to read a hundred marketing magazines, journals and Web sites each month to get the information they want. Instead, they can just find a handful of bloggers to find, field, and filter the information for them.
What if you can become the filter for your customers? You can provide a digest version of the latest industry trends and news that matter most to them. You can become the blog they can’t live without.
Of course! It’s forehead-smackingly obvious when you put it that way, Andy.
And the beauty of it is, it works for any niche, any hobby, any specialized area of interest.
What’s more, the book even gives the most friendly walk-through for setting up your first blog! And since I’m usually the first line of tech support in our two-person company, I can truly appreciate a blog set-up routine that, to borrow from Lionel Ritchie, is easy like Sunday morning.
It’s a great way to dive in and start to “A-Ha Youself!” Give it a try!
(Seriously, try it - Andy offers a free excerpt from Blogwild! right here.)

“Oh no he di’in’t!”
Ah, YES, hedid.
Even before Samuel L. Jackson had a chance to shoot a “Snakes on a Treadmill” spot to leverage the hot viral content that is the “OK Go - Here It Goes Again” music video, a guy named Seung Lee got his Legos out and seized a content opportunity that deserves some applause. Check it out:
Why is this totally awesome?
- It’s fresh. It’s not just a “standard” knockoff of the treadmill dance, with four new faces sliding and gliding to a different song…It’s freakin’ LEGOS, dude!
- It’s creativity spun FAST. This is a person who watched something funny, thought about it, had an idea to put a fresh spin on it, and then put the idea into JOY-FILLED ACTION. Love that.
- It’s *almost* strategic. Lee noticed a lot of people were watching this short video on You Tube, so he took advantage of the instant audience factor and served it up to the willing parties. Very smart.
But still, he did something wrong.
He didn’t include an easy way for grateful viewers to reward him with their visits, their purchasing power, or whatever they were willing to give him.
He almost did. He slapped on something that said “LNY Productions” before his Lego-riffic work and after it. And he even included his name. But we, the viewers, are LAZY.
We’re watching it on our computers, and we don’t want to have to work to figure out who this guy is, or what “LNY Productions” is, or why he or they bothered to put this together in the first place.
C’mon Lee! Next time, offer up a URL, give me a product to consider, or even spread some message you’d like to give to the world. Yes, there’s something charming about great content and creativity as an end to itself.
But when it’s just as easy to promote your talents, interests, and ideas with the materials you’re already making, wouldn’t it make more sense to take advantage of the opportunity you’ve created?
Even if you only get 10% - or 1%! - clicking through to your website, purchasing your wares, or absorbing a blip of your life philosophy - that’s hundreds or thousands of folks.
That’s power. That’s adventure. That’s inviting the unpredictable and opening yourself up to future possibilites.
THAT’S how you A-Ha Yourself!

A short while ago, I blogged that You Tube is a creative professional’s secret weapon for radical exposure and worldwide domination. Or something along those lines.
Now I’d like to show you exactly what I’m talking about. Below you’ll see a video clip with that confident “You Tube” mark stamped right in the corner. However, you may not notice that right way. Instead, you may be wondering why four adult gentlemen are standing with the queen’s posture on top of a sea of treadmills. If you’re a mildly normal human being, you’ll be intrigued enough to click the “Play” button to see what’s up.
Then you’ll get the priceless golden ring of life: You’ll laugh.
Depending on what kind of person you are, this may not happen right away. You may squint, cock your head, shrug, or crinkle up your nose in a scoff, wondering why the heck the friend who sent this to you is wasting your time, or why these four misfits are wasting your time, or why you don’t just shun technology once and for all pull a Walden Pond for the rest of your life.
But as you continue watching, at some point you’re going to forced to confront a few thoughts:
- How long did these guys practice?
- Why did they even come up with this idea?
- Where do you get a sea of treadmills?
And the big one:
- Who ARE these dudes, and what else do they have to show me?
Unfortunately, this video clip doesn’t answer these questions for me. But if they ended this modern-day Busby Berkeley production with a website, a product, or a bold call to action, then baby — there’s a really good chance I’d go deeper down the rabbit hole with them.
I don’t know who they are. I don’t know if it’s their music (which I love, and I’d probably download into my iTunes in a heartbeat, if only to show my 99-cent support for their time and creativity!), or if they’re just a bunch of mod cyber-goofs playing around with their techie toys.
All I know is if I see a screen capture of four unusual hipsters again, I’m going to click. And hopefully next time they’ll invite me to get to know them better.
Play with your content. The rules don’t exist anymore. It’s the wild, wild West of self-expression. Jump on the covered wagon and A-Ha Yourself!

Six-time winner of Forbes Magazine’s “Best of the Best” Award, Acorn Creative tapped us to give their new website (being launched next week) the fresh voice and vigor it deserves for the company’s bold new direction.
Late last night, we delivered our first round of copy. And this morning, as we were listening to Acorn’s “Chief Nut” Kevin Skarritt (pictured) heap piles of compliments onto our work over the speakerphone, we were literally dancing around our little home office. Oh, it feels good to get it right on the first time - AND to give incredibly talented companies the words to express the amazing things they do!
And as if that wasn’t enough, Kevin agreed to leave a message for us on our testimonial line. Isn’t he the greatest?

“The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it.”
-Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s
See that quote up there? It’s pretty close to supporting our gavel-banging declaration that a TRUE “A-Ha” is Bold Insight PLUS Joy-Filled Action.
Now granted, “being in the right place at the right time” isn’t an “insight” per se, but being in the right place at the right time often spurs valuable insights. What’s more, when you get good at following your instincts, being in the right place at the right time is seldom an accident.
But it’s that second half of the quote that really grabs our attention. More and more, as Allen and I tune into the power of the “Aha!” moment and its potential, we realize that the rocket science of success is in the action you take after your insight strikes.
Hey, Ray Kroc said it. It must be true!

A lot of small business owners, solo-professionals, and cubicle-dwellers who have yet to make the bold leap out of corporate safety and into the abyss of “Yipes! What now?!!!” often say that money - or rather, lack thereof - is a barrier to their success.
Nonsense.
The only barrier to success these days for ANY endeavor, big or small, is a lack of creativity. Why? Because the Internet is this giant cornucopia of galactic reach and potential, just waiting to pluck out the finest, ripest fruit and deliver these juicy yum-yums to the niche audiences that crave them.
And one place people are looking for targeted yum-yums is www.YouTube.com.
Armed with the simple motto and directive “Broadcast Yourself” (something about that two-word call to action pleases me…hmmm. What could it be?), YouTube.com was founded on Valentine’s Day of 2005, received funding in November of 2005, and now serves up information and entertainment 70 million times a day to rabid viewers around the world.
In the last month alone I’ve had friends and family - including business owners, full-time mommies, Internet-addicted uncles, former colleagues, high-school alumni, grad students, and fellow laugh-aholics - send me videos of barfing babies, dancing comedians, a time-elapse artpiece of the Nile river, galloping camels, and grumbling geriatrics.
And today I’ve just watched a nine-plus minute commercial for Subway that’s also a brilliant demo reel for an international creative marketing agency called, well, Agency.com.
Would I have ever voluntarily watched a nine-plus minute commercial about submarine sandwiches? Absolutely not.
Was it AWESOME to see 18 hours of footage about the creative process and the talent behind it distilled down to just over 540 seconds?
You bet it was.
And guess what? The YouTube.com service is FREE. That’s right. You shoot the video, they provide the forum. That’s the game.
Of course, if you want to make YouTube.com effective for your own business, you have to do your best to create compelling content. Viral content that splashes your ideas or brand to hundreds, even millions of viewers doesn’t take off just because you want it to.
But the good thing is, there are no rules that say you can’t experiement with the medium. The Agency.com video may have top-line talent behind it, but sometimes too much polish can turn people off.
Remember: Quality content trumps glitz 99.9% of the time.
Entertain, offer an experience, inform, delight your audience, educate, experiment, and offer up new ways to see that world - and if you can do this while getting your name out there, you’ve just earned yourself a million dollar advertising budget for the price of your own willingness to think outside of the box.
The YouTube box, that is.
Tools like this that are specifically designed to handle and honor creative, hot viral content abound on the Internet. They exist and profit from your best efforts. They’re sitting there waiting for you to show ‘em what you got.
Why not take ‘em up on the offer?

I love and hate my camera phone.
I love it because it’s always with me, and I can always take a few pics of things in spontaneous moments.
I hate it because the quality of the snapshot is always in question, and I NEVER get the pictures off of my phone and into somewhere else I’d like to see them.
Until now!
Without further ado, may I present to you…
“How Allen and Lani Spent August 4th and 5th, 2006: A Visual History!”

Garden Grove, CA — the view from our hotel suite. Disneyland was a stone’s throw down the road, but unfortunately, as much as I tried to get all “Scorcese” with my camera phone, I couldn’t find an angle that could capture any part of Mickey or his friends.

So there’s Allen striking a pose in the front part of our stylin’ suite…

And there I am in the “Den o’ Love” - complete with king size bed, the suite’s 2nd TV, and a very sexy ironing board.
Moving on…
So how do we spend these glamorous Mastermind days? Oh, it’s scintilating - let me tell YOU! Mostly, around tables, giant wall Post-It notes, and projector screens like these: and . Doesn’t that look like a room full of FUN?!!!
Believe it or not, it IS really fun, if you get over your fears and give into the intensity of the environment. Ideas, tips, and proven tactics fly at you from all angles, and you just have to set your frequency to HIGH and let it all come rushing in - or else scribble it down in a frenzy for future processing.
But every hard-working business owner needs to step away from the work eventually, and what better way to do this than by going out with your pals for a decadent Italian dinner? (Even though you all went out for a family-style Italian lunch. Oops. Poor planning.)
We had a two-minute limo ride to the restaurant — just enough for a couple of photo opps: — our happy MM cohorts, and – us with Sir Adam.
And now…grainy camera phone pics from the restaurant!
That’s the lovely and gifted Ms. Erika Gombosova of http://www.liveyourlife.us/. Erika helps blocked professionals identify and overcome obstacles from their past so they can reclaim their purpose and turbo-charge their lives for more time, money, and full-bodied success. Doesn’t she have a great smile?
And there I am with the trailblazin’, copywritin’ spitfire herself, Ms. Michele Pariza-Wacek (www.MichelePW.com). Michele is an “Integrated Marketing and Copywriting Strategist” who provides results-driven content for her clients. Basically, Michele makes sure the words and messaging her clients send out to the world don’t just sound good, but earn them more clients, opportunities, and yes — money! Michele is a talented creative writer, too, and she’s written two works of fiction that she’s currently shopping around to agents and publishing houses. (Learn more about those here.)
Oh, and look! It’s the power couple — Paul and Kira Wagner!
Paul is the guy who’s going to be my hero over the next year, because he IS ”The Software Magician” - http://www.softwaremagician.com/ - and he specializes in helping small-biz folks like me use Outlook more effectively so we can save time, manage our contacts, streamline our email networking and opportunities, and work this valuable tool so we can add mucho bucks-o to our bottom line. (Soooo excited about Paul’s goals for the next 12 months!)
And Kira! Well, this dynamo is here to change lives for the better. She’s a coach, entertainer, radio host, muse, speaker, and she’s all about FREEDOM. What do I mean? Well, she’s the creator of a five-part system for solo-professionals and small biz owners called “Freedom’s Formula” (http://www.freedomsformula.com/), she’s author of “The Handbook for Freedom” — AND her radio show is called “The Freedom Factors,” on which she interviews a range of entrepreneurs and professionals to share ideas and advice on how to emancipate yourself so you can totally ROCK.
“waaah-waaahh-waahh…” Hark, do I hear a baby crying? Oh, that means we’re coming up to the Diva of Doulas, the Babe of Birthing, the Queen of Contractions herself…
Ms. Sheri Menelli! Ain’t she the cutest, tho’? (Sheri, not me.) Sheri is author of “Journey into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth,” she’s a hypnotherapist who offers downloadable MP3s for insomniacs, the stressed-out, entrepreneurial dreamers, and even gals who need a little help breastfeeding. As if that wasn’t enough, Sheri teaches training courses to midwives and doulas who want to turn their much-sought-after expertise from a maternal hobby into a thriving, focused business. (Check out her mojo at http://www.birthingbusiness.com/!)
Drat! I’ve just discovered that I didn’t manage to snap any candids of two of my Mastermind pals, Ms. Laura Kostyo and Mr. Russell Eberhardt.
(No biggie - I’ll just grab a pic from the Internet, right?)
Presenting Ms. Kostyo. At first blush, Laura is a mild-mannered sweetie, but don’t let her easy, approachable demeanor fool you. When it comes to real estate, brokering deals, and getting first-time homebuyers the homes they deserve at the interest rates they can afford, Laura is a BULLDOG! In fact, she’s so committed to leveraging her experience as a real estate agent broker, investor and helping people live the American dream that she’s using the next 12 months to develop programs and tools designed to streamline the home-buying process for everyone smart enough to work with her. How do I know she’s so good at what she does? Well, the national average for getting loans approved is a dismal 50%. Laura’s average? 97% - even though her typical client has a less-than-perfect credit rating and no money for a downpayment! You gotta admit - THAT’S pretty impressive.
And then there’s Mr. Eberhardt. Russell (who you can actually see in the limo picture, I’m happy to say), initially joined the Mastermind group as a support team for Erika, because he’s absolutely committed to Erika’s talent and vision and has seen her change people’s lives for the better over and over again. But a cool thing happened at the end of the second day. Russell said he’s going to resurrect and pursue his own personal business goals, too. Way to go Russell! And since he’s a specialized teacher who’s spent the last quarter century as registered nurse and a dedicated student of osteopathic health alternatives, I have no doubt his offerings will transform lives in countless and profound ways.
Wow, am I blogged out! I sure hope I didn’t miss anyone. Adam? Allen? You guys can fend for yourselves.

I’m in a stellar hotel suite in Garden Grove, CA right now, and I’m listening to Allen talk to our son, who’s staying with his Grandy and Fuddy in New Hampshire. Context clues tell me that our almost-four-year old just asked Allen: “What did YOU do today, Daddy?” Here’s Allen’s answer:
“Well Joe, Mommy and I sat in a room with a lot of other nice people, and we talked about ways to make money.”
I’m glad I eavsdropped, because I was sitting here, just before we get whisked away in a limo to go to a swank Italian restaurant (Adam’s treating us — isn’t he nice?!), and I was trying to figure out what the heck we actually DID do today. And what Al told our son pretty much sums it up.
Al and I met Adam at 7:30am for breakfast, then we went to a conference room at 9am, set up, and waited for everyone else to fill in so we could start at 10am. We had the “quick” overall biz catch-ups from 10-noonish, and then the real fun started AFTER lunch…
When we returned, we pulled straws (so to speak), and Al and I got to be the first pair to present our business, what our plans are, and what we should do to catch up to our financial goals in the next 90 days. ‘Twas a hodge-podge, as it is VERY easy to get overwhelmed with this stuff, and VERY difficult to summarize in desperate, open-wounded gasps what Al and I have been talking about and dreaming about for the last two years. Still, we did the best with what we had.
And THIS is what we learned:
- People don’t LISTEN to what you say as much as they WATCH how you’re saying it. You can give your canned ideas, say what you’re supposed to say, but if you’ve got your arms crossed, if you balk at simple questions, if you hesitate at core concepts, then people will make judgments, and their feedback will be based on those judgments, NOT on what you’re telling them, no matter how hard you try to say what you think is REALLY on your mind.
- You have to be really, truly clear about what YOU want, if you have a shot in hell at communicating what you think you need, to other people. Now, this is something Al and I are working through — but this year it often feels like it’s a little too little too late. We keep THINKING we’re clear, but when push comes to shove, we’re not able to produce our internal information in easy, digestible ways. Which leads me to our next lesson…
- It’s OK if the feedback you get is WAY off base, as long as you listen to your audience’s interpretation of what you’re saying and work with their version to improve your messaging. It’s really easy to take feedback that seems totally out of whack from what you’re trying to say and start fighting it like a mother bear. Don’t defend — just listen. YOU know what’s true about yourself, your vision, your instincts. Use this opportunity to discover how people interpret what you’re saying you do — then work to get it as crisp and clean as you can so the differential gets smaller, and smaller, and smaller…
- CELEBRATE where you are right NOW! OK, we all want to be further along from wherever we are in this moment. That’s life, right? But somehow the angst of what we DON’T know, or what we HAVEN’T done yet gets in the way of feeling good about the fact that we’re “doin’ the best with what we got.” As long as we keep learning, keep plodding, and keep finding new ways to improve our skills and have FUN, then we can count on the fact that we WILL get better all the time, and we WILL be at a better place in three months than we are today. Now c’mon, that’s a GREAT feeling. That kind of affirmative knowledge can keep you going forEVER.
And as long as we find new ways to keep going (and LOVE it while we’re going along), we’re in really good shape.

Just yesterday, a miracle occurred in the Voivod household.
There were no potatoes resembling the marvelous contours of Brad Pitt’s face, or celestial visits from deceased poets.
No — THIS miracle was of the “one small step for the average online maverick, but one giant LEAP for the striving online maverick” variety.
THIS miracle was the miracle of creation. Of E-Product creation. Our first. Unleashed. Out, to the world, at long last.
Goodness gracious, but it took a heap of effort!
Of course, maybe it wouldn’t have been quite as harrowing if our first e-product didn’t set out to overthrow the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America…But then again, that’s probably just Monday morning quarterbacking.
Suffice it to say, The Content Lovers bit off more than we planned to chew with our first effort, so it’s only good form to share what we learned so that you might approach your e-product ideas with a bit more wisdom and grace.
Shall we?
- Even the most thorough step-by-step systems leave about half of the steps out. It’s not anyone’s fault — it’s just that things come up, no matter HOW methodic you think you are — and they have to be dealt with. Nuts.
- Whatever you think you’re going to spend in time, money, and effort on your first e-product? Quintuple it. Then double that. Then add a buffer. THEN take a long walk, and have a laugh at this unconventional life you’re carving, cuz baby — this IS the journey!
- If you have a choice, don’t look to the monkey on your back (or your biz partner’s back) as that first experimental “thing” you want to product-ize and monetize. No no no, NOT a good choice. Unless you’re stubborn and crazy, like we are. Then it’s just your destiny, Luke, and there ain’t nuthin’ you can do about it.
- Showering every once in a while is good for everyone involved. When you’re pulling stupid hours around the clock, and it’s the middle of July in New England, and going out in public — like, to the grocery store — is as far away from your reality as meeting the Duchess of York for tea, a little soap and water on your bod and a wash-rinse-repeat cycle on your hair (and, if you’re REALLY ambitious, a shave!) reminds you that basic self-care rituals aren’t useless — they’re actually essential for a healthy environment.
- Experienced guidance is a MUST. If you think it’s easy to navigate your way through the labyrinth of shopping cart systems, merchant accounts, Google AdWords, market research, project planning, virtual workspaces, sales letter production, autoresponders, and smart business practices in general, you’ve got another thing coming!
- Virtual Assistants really do ROCK. They are not only the cat’s meow, but the dog’s bark, the loon’s mystical song, the camel’s hump, the fish’s gills, the bee’s knees, and the chicken’s best eggs, all rolled up into one. (Thanks again and always, Margot Thompson!)
- A really good Mentor (and rare human being) lets you learn the hard way, even when he did everything he could to lead you away from that ultra-rugged route. In our case, it’s Adam Urbanski. Even though he tried to warn us, and we ultimately shunned his strong recommendations to go gung-ho into our first e-product, Adam STILL managed to give us invaluable feedback, encouragement, time, and advice. I don’t know how or why, but he did. Phew. (Next time, we’ll try it your way instead, Adam. )
- The only way out is through. Yup. It’s true. You’ll never know until you try, and you’ll never get around to actually trying if you don’t just leap into the center of everything and figure out how to get out before your time’s up. I didn’t think we were EVER going to make it out to the other side, but we did, and we’re happy happy HAPPY to be here. We’re still married, we’re still in business, and we’re looking at our next projects with less fear than before. These are very good things.
- The entrepreneur lifestyle is built to support your work style and success…if only you’d let it. Making that transition from the JOB mentality to being accountable for your own success can be pretty sticky. You’re always wondering if you’re working enough, productive enough, doing enough, etc. Sometimes it’s the snide comments from friends and family (”Oh, it must be nice to be able to take a walk in the afternoon…”) or your own inner drill sergeant (”Get back to that desk and WORK! I don’t care if you were up until 2am. You’re not done, and you’ve got work to do!”), it’s easy to lose sight that you chose this path because you: A) Trust Yourself and your abilities, B) Relish flexibility, C) LIKE to work on your own projects, and D) Excel in finding creative ways to fulfill your goals and dreams.
So if I could do the last month over again — not that I’d want to, but if I could…
I’d take more advantage of this situation I created. I’d take more walks, crash unapologetically in the middle of the day instead of barreling through dry spells and low-energy foot-dragging, and step AWAY from the work — and/or my business partner — when the work took on more ridiculous weight than a bloody container ship. Step away, get some perspective, fill the well…whatever you call it. Just find a way to take a look at the life of the forest before you go face-first into the mighty oak right in front of you.
Now it’s OFF to our first Mastermind retreat in Orange County, CA, where I’m SURE Allen and I will come back home with our next, much simpl | |
